Why Am I Loosing My Bondings?

We at Eliza Munich do our best to ensure you receive the highest, world class service and bondings available. We do everything we can to guarantee you the most beautiful, natural and invisible keratin bondings.

However, unfortunately, like every beauty treatment out there; care is important! And sometimes, without the appropriate care, your keratin bondings may slip off or you may lose a few or even at times, all of them. In this article we show you why and how to avoid it. But, first things first to answer the big question, how long should keratin bondings really last? Well, Keratin bonding extensions typically last around 3–5 months, depending on how well you take care of them. There are many potential reasons as to why your bondings might be falling out. Below, we have listed the most common reasons and therefore the dos and donts for caring for your keratin extensions.

On a side note, if you have a thinner hair structure, your bondings are expected to last 2-3.5 months because they are more likely to get tangled faster than thicker hair and therefore you could lose them faster.

  • You are brushing your hair too hard; Caring for your keratin bond hair extensions starts with how you brush your hair. Using the right brush type is essential to avoid damaging your extensions. A soft-bristle brush or a unique extension brush is recommended to detangle your hair gently. We at Eliza Munich recommend you purchase one of our hair detanglers for the best possible outcome! To prevent the tangles from getting worse, it is best to start at the ends and work your way up to the roots. Be gentle when brushing your hair, and avoid pulling or tugging on the extensions.

  • Washing your keratin bond hair extensions carefully is crucial for maintaining their longevity. First and foremost, it's essential to use the right products. Learn more here: Care Guide For Your Extensions

  • Heat styling! We can’t say this enough but just like with regular hair, heat styling is one of the most common causes of extensions damage. High temperatures can weaken and melt the bonds causing them to slip and even fall out. To keep your extensions in good condition, it's best to avoid using heat styling tools altogether. Instead, try air-drying your hair or using a cool setting on your blow dryer.

  • Using products such as a conditioner or an argan oil can break down the keratin causing them to become 'squishy' and loose.

  • This one is tough for the summer but yes ladies, swimming too often can most certainly cause your bondings to fall out. Because of the chlorine and salt in the water, the keratin connections in your hair may become more easily broken.

  • Hair dye is another factor that can cause your extensions to fall out! Be careful and only go to professionals who know how to dye your hair with hair extensions.

  • Excessive sweat and oily hair from sports can also cause your keratin Bondings to slip out. We recommend you to tie up your hair away from your neck and forehead before starting your workout whilst also making sure this isn't too tight and tugging at the bonds.

  • If you just had a keratin hair straightening treatment within the last 2-4 weeks prior to your extensions service, you will most certainly lose a lot of bondings. This is because your natural hair is now made sleek and therefore is not the best base for keratin bondings.

  • Sleek ponytails are also a common cause for loss of bondings. When you pull your hair back tight, the bondings are tugged on causing them to slip. Instead, go for a more relaxed style or use claw clips to achieve a pulled back look.

  • Another reason for your loss of bondings can be due to leaving your hair dirty for too long. This creates a lot of oil in the scalp and therefore the hair, damaging the bondings.

  • Wash out your shampoo completely! Leftover shampoo stays attached to the bondings and because these textures and formulas are fatty, they break down the keratin bonding causing them to slip!

All in all, losing a few bondings is normal. Some people lose 5-10 in the first few weeks and many lose zero in the entire 12 weeks. It really depends on many factors including oils in your natural hair, products and brushes you use, how you care for the hair and how fine your natural hair is.
